    Behavioral-Independent Features of Complex Heartbeat Dynamics

    We test whether the complexity of cardiac interbeat interval time series is simply a consequence of the wide range of scales characterizing human behavior, especially physical activity, by analyzing data taken from healthy adult subjects under three conditions with controls: (i) a ``constant routine'' protocol where physical activity and postural changes are kept to a minimum, (ii) sympathetic blockade, and (iii) parasympathetic blockade. We find that when fluctuations in physical activity and other behavioral modifiers are minimized, a remarkable level of complexity of heartbeat dynamics remains, while for neuroautonomic blockade the multifractal complexity decreases.Comment: 4 pages with 6 eps figures.     ABCC11/MRP8 Expression in the Gastrointestinal Tract and a Novel Role for Pepsinogen Secretion

    ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are involved in chemotherapy resistance. Multidrug-resistance protein 8 (ABCC11/MRP8) is also involved in 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) metabolism. 5-FU and its derivatives are widely used in the treatment of gastrointestinal tract cancers, but little is known about the contribution of ABCC11/MRP8 to gastrointestinal tract and related cancers. Here, we report our investigation of ABCC11/MRP8 expression in normal and cancerous gastrointestinal tract tissues and reveal its novel role in the gastric mucosa. In tissue microarray and surgically resected cancer specimens, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining revealed significantly reduced expression of ABCC11/ MRP8 in gastrointestinal tract cancers compared with other cancers. In contrast, strong ABCC11/MRP8 expression was observed in normal gastric mucosa. Additional immuno-fluorescence assays revealed co-localization of ABCC11/MRP8 and pepsinogen I in normal gastric chief cells. Quantitative PCR and Western blot analysis also revealed significant expression of ABCC11/MRP8 in fundic mucosa where the chief cells are mainly located. Furthermore, the ABCC11 mRNA-suppressed NCI-N87 gastric cancer cell line failed to secret pepsinogen I extracellularly. Thus, low expression of ABCC11/MRP8 is consistent with chemotherapeutic regimens using 5-FU and its derivatives in gastrointestinal tract cancers.     Effect of boron deficiency on tip burn and malformed fruit incidence in strawberries

    Boron (B) is an essential micro element for plants and plays important roles in the synthesis and functions of cell wall. B deficiency has been reported as one of the causes of fruit malformation in strawberries. We investigated the effect of B deficiency on flower and fruit development of forced strawberries for two cropping seasons (2015-2017). In the second season, B was resupplied for B-deficient plants and we investigated changes in fruit development. When B-free nutrient solutions were supplied, tip burn began to occur in newly emerging leaves and calyx 2 to 3 months later, and fruit malformation including seedy or only partly developed fruits with undeveloped achenes occurred frequently. However, these deficient symptoms were quickly disappeared by supplying B containing nutrient solutions. In conclusion, B nutrition is closely related to the occurrence of fruit malformation through fertility of pollen and pistils, and also development of receptacle tissue in strawberries. It should be possible to reduce fruit malformation in strawberries by proper control of B nutrition. B(ホウ素)は植物にとって必須な微量要素であり,イチゴの受精不良果発生要因の1 つである.そこで2015年度と2016年度の2 回にわたりB 欠乏がイチゴの受精不良果発生に及ぼす影響について調査した.また,2016年度はB 欠乏処理後にB 回復処理を行い,その後のイチゴの果実形態の変化についても調査した.その結果,B欠乏処理を行うと蒸散機能の低い新葉や花芽においてチップバーンが発生し,種浮き果や部分不受精を主とした受精不良果が多発した.しかし,B 回復処理を行うことでこれらの症状が改善することが明らかになった.B は受精不良果発生に関係しており,欠乏条件下で根から吸収させると急速に若い成長中の組織に転流することが示されたことから,B 栄養をコントロールすることでB 不足によるイチゴの受精不良果発生を軽減できる可能性があると考えられる

    Dynamic localization of a yeast development–specific PP1 complex during prospore membrane formation is dependent on multiple localization signals and complex formation

    During the developmental process of sporulation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, membrane structures called prospore membranes are formed de novo, expand, extend, acquire a round shape, and finally become plasma membranes of the spores. GIP1 encodes a regulatory/targeting subunit of protein phosphatase type 1 that is required for sporulation. Gip1 recruits the catalytic subunit Glc7 to septin structures that form along the prospore membrane; however, the molecular basis of its localization and function is not fully understood. Here we show that Gip1 changes its localization dynamically and is required for prospore membrane extension. Gip1 first associates with the spindle pole body as the prospore membrane forms, moves onto the prospore membrane and then to the septins as the membrane extends, distributes around the prospore membrane after closure, and finally translocates into the nucleus in the maturing spore. Deletion and mutation analyses reveal distinct sequences in Gip1 that are required for different localizations and for association with Glc7. Binding to Glc7 is also required for proper localization. Strikingly, localization to the prospore membrane, but not association with septins, is important for Gip1 function. Further, our genetic analysis suggests that a Gip1–Glc7 phosphatase complex regulates prospore membrane extension in parallel to the previously reported Vps13, Spo71, Spo73 pathway

    Usefulness of measuring hepatic functional volume using technetium-99m galactosyl serum albumin scintigraphy in hilar bile duct carcinoma

    This case involved a 75-year-old woman with obstructive jaundice who was diagnosed with hilar bile duct carcinoma. After endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage, the total bilirubin level was normalized. The indocyanine green test retention rate at 15 min (ICGR15) was 26%. The liver uptake ratio (LHL15) by technetium-99m galactosyl human serum albumin (99mTc-GSA) liver scintigraphy was 0.87. Left hepatectomy was scheduled by CT volumetry. However, biliary drainage was insufficient, and the functional liver volume showed functional deterioration of the left liver. After percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage, future remnant liver volume by 99mTc-GSA liver scintigraphy changed to 52% from 42%, and ICGR15 and LHL15 were improved to 16% and 0.914, respectively. Scheduled left hepatectomy was performed following the results of functional liver volume. The measurement of functional volume by 99mTc-GSA liver scintigraphy provides useful information with respect to segmental liver function for deciding operative indications

    Clinical significance of portal vein embolization before right hepatectomy

    Background/Aims: To identify clinical significances of portal vein embolization (PVE) prior to major hepatectomy, we examined clinical parameters and outcome after right hepatectomy in patients who underwent PVE. Methodology: The subjects were 30 patients who underwent PVE (PVE group), and 52 patients (non-PVE), in whom PVE was considered unnecessary, followed by right hepatectomy for hepatobiliary cancer. Results: Total hepatic volume after PVE (1068±268 ml) tended to increase compared with before PVE (p=0.059). After PVE, the change in hemi-liver volume was 8.9±6.0%. Increases in hepatic volume of non-embolized left liver before and at 4 weeks after hepatectomy between the PVE and non-PVE groups were similar. Changes in hepatic volumes before and after PVE were not significantly influenced by background liver disease. After PVE, the functional liver volume (419±185cm 3) was significantly lower than morphological volume (564±165cm3) in the embolized liver (p<0.05). Although preoperative liver function was worse in the PVE group compared with non-PVE, serious hepatic complications were rarely observed in the PVE group. Conclusions: Marked changes in hepatic volume were noted after PVE in patients with impaired liver function and those who need large-volume right hepatectomy, especially in functional volume, suggesting that PVE is a useful procedure to prevent postoperative liver failure

    Preoperative Diagnosis of Lymph Node Metastasis in Biliary and Pancreatic Carcinomas: Evaluation of the Combination of Multi-detector CT and Serum CA19-9 Level.

    BACKGROUND: It is difficult to diagnose lymph node metastasis in biliary and pancreas carcinomas before surgery. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the utility of the combination of multi-detector computed tomographic (MDCT) findings and serum carbohydrate antigen (CA)19-9 level in the diagnosis of lymph node metastasis in biliary and pancreas carcinomas. METHODS: The subjects were 139 patients with biliary and pancreas carcinomas who underwent surgical resection. We calculated the positive predictive values (PPV), sensitivities, specificities, positive likelihood ratios (PLR) and accuracies of diagnosis by MDCT alone, serum CA19-9 level alone, and their combination. RESULTS: The PPV and sensitivity were higher for node metastasis in hepatoduodenal ligament than in common hepatic artery (CHA) or para-aortic region (PAR). Specificity, accuracy and PLR were highest for CHA in biliary carcinoma. With pancreatic carcinoma, PLR was slightly higher in PAR compared to other regions. The sensitivity of CA19-9 for node metastasis was higher than that of MDCT, while the PPV, specificity, accuracy and PLR were low for both biliary and pancreas carcinoma. The combination of positive CT findings and high CA19-9 level had the highest positive rate for node metastasis for both types of carcinomas. Nodes around the supra-mesenteric vein could not be fully observed on CT. CONCLUSION: The combination of high-resolution MDCT and CA19-9 is useful for the diagnosis of lymph node metastasis in biliary and pancreas carcinomas.The original publication is available at www.springerlink.co
